About ComplexEnergy

ComplexEnergy is a Support Action in response to the FP7 ICT call 4, topic ICT-2009.8.10 Identifying new research topics and assessing emerging global S&T trends in ICT for future FET Proactive initiatives.

The project was launched on 2nd November 2009 and will last fifteen months. At the end of the duration, the ComplexEnergy initiative hopes to achieve the following:

  • The development of a white paper addressing the research community at large, identifying the potential of ICT-enabled innovative energy modeling, control and management solutions, able to build on results of complex systems research.
  • The construction of a roadmap for future FET initiatives targeting projects working at the junction of ICT, Energy and Complex Systems domains.
  • The magnification of the level of awareness, at European scale, of the potential impact of advanced ICT techniques implementing concepts, tools and results from Complex Systems research for the design and governance of the energy system.

To meet these goals, ComplexEnergy is organized around four workpackages.

  • WP1 deals with Management aspects.
  • WP2 will target the preparation of a White Paper on Strategic areas, Research Challenges and Emerging Trends at the junction of ICT, Energy and Complex Systems domains. WP2 will be in charge of organizing the first ComplexEnergy Workshop, which will feature eminent representatives from the three research communities drawn from the ComplexEnergy Expert Panel.
  • WP3 will target the preparation of a Roadmap for Future FET Initiatives on ICT-enabled Complex Systems Techniques for the Modeling, Design and Governance of the EnergySystem. WP3 will be in charge of organising the second ComplexEnergy Workshop, which will gather the members of the ComplexEnergy Expert Panel, together with a broader stakeholder community including policy makers, other key members of the three research communities, public bodies and industry representatives.
  • WP4 is a transversal workpackage covering Communication and Dissemination aspects. Additionally, WP4 will be in charge of organising the Expert Panel.

Expert Panel

The establishment of an Expert Panel is a vital component of the ComplexEnergy initiative. This 8-person group will provide provide personal and direct communication between research communities.

The panel will consist of key researchers from the three R&D communities: ICT, Complexity Science, and Energy.

The objective of the Expert Panel is to provide scientific advice and guidance on relevant challenges. Throughout the ComplexEnergy initiative, including the two ComplexEnergy workshops, the Expert Panel will review the project results providing feedback.

Workshops / Final Conference

ComplexEnergy will have 2 workshops throughout the duration of the initiative:

  • WS-1: Research trends at the junction of Energy, ICT and Complex Systems. The workshop will have a strong scientific profile and will mainly reach out to the research community with the objective of feeding the White Paper.
  • WS-2: Roadmap for future FET initiatives. An interactive discussion with policy makers and other stakeholders will be held with the aim to develop a feasible roadmap.

The Final conference will disseminate the results from ComplexEnergy among the key stakeholders.
